Thereīs a small suburb near the centre of Auckland called Mt Eden. Itīs a kind of village in a city. The houses are dotted around and below the green slopes of a small mountain (one of the many extinct volcanoes in the area). Itīs idyllic. Lots of artists live there, many since their student days. Everyone knows everyone. Itīs a community, and itīs cool without being aware of it. I lived there for years, got to know them and became good friends with some, and of course photographed many of these artists, writers, photographers, designers, musicians, and sculptors. Here I present you with a cross-section - from a precocious seven-year old to a "retired" master - a small tribute to you all. In my heart Mt Eden is still my home.

What do you believe? We know, or should know, that we create our own realities. And believe them. Does a photo provide evidence, or prove anything? Maybe it's the question of how to look at reality, and then to work out what is true - if we are in fact capable of this... Click here to see the series True Fiction.

This is the first part of a six-part project which will take several years to complete: a series of portraits of workers in their workplaces in the Kirow factory, Leipzig, Germany - very simply posed and with no discussion. They are the last of the GDR faces still at work - they are the "once were heroes" - but now without the idealistic socialist cradle. They are the past. (The rest of the Workers series will appear here shortly) Click here to see the series Workers. |
